If you are going abroad for more than 3 months, it is important that you contact us before you leave the UK, with as much advance notice as possible. If you do not inform us of your circumstances you may be subject to penalties.
If you are overseas and out with the UK tax system you will make student loan repayments directly to us. The type of loan you have will determine how your repayment amount will be calculated.
Fixed Term Loans (pre 1998)
If you took out a student loan before 1 September 1998 you will make repayments by monthly instalments based on the amount you owe. These repayments will be made over a fixed 5 or 7 year period, depending on how many loans you have – see the Fixed Term Repayments section for more information.
Income Based Loans (1998 onwards)
If you took out a student loan from 1 September 1998 onwards you will make Income Contingent Repayments. This means the repayment amount will be based on how much you earn - see the Income Based Repayments section for more information.
